This workshop will introduce inter-professional learners to key concepts in palliative care, considering the experiences and needs of older adults

 Learning objectives – by the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Define, describe and differentiate “Hospice palliative care” as a philosophy of care, a specialty, a service/program and a setting
• Gain insight in to special considerations related to hospice palliative care for older adult
• Further develop an understanding and comfort in formulating goals of care for older adults
• Further develop an understanding of concepts around advance care planning for older adults

Format:    Learners will review weekly course materials and respond to weekly questions in an online discussion forum at their discretion. In addition, the facilitators are planning a real time session once a week to complement the online instruction – Wed 7-8pm EST.

Week 1  

1. Hospice Palliative Care – definition, differences (between “hospice” and “palliative care”) and delivery
2. Unique hospice palliative care needs of the older adult

Week 2  

1. Advance Care Planning:  definition and approaches; tools that can be used
2. Establishing Goals of Care:  definition and approaches; tools that can be used

Week 3  

1. Family meetings – the nuts and bolts
2. Finding services for patients and their caregivers

Week 4  

1. Addressing Caregiver Needs
2. Grief, Bereavement care – what, why and how

 This workshop will be offered online and will only be offered if there is sufficient enrolment.

It’s that time of the year!  The Toronto Central Palliative Care Network’s Fourth Annual State of the Union will be held on May 4, 2012 from 9:00 to 4:00PM at University of Toronto’s Sandford Fleming Building (10 King’s College Road).  We have collectively planned a themed event focused on a very important and current issue:

 HOSPICE PALLIATIVE CARE & COMMUNICATION

 We are inviting network members, their staff, volunteers and partners to attend the event.  This year’s theme on hospice palliative care and communication will be our most exciting and stimulating event to-date as it will:

1. Raise awareness of alternate communication vehicles like music
2. Open up conversations as to who, when and how to talk to government
3. Identify language issues and bias when speaking to patients and their families
4. Outline how to communicate to the proper audience
5. Explore how to engage in an open dialogue with government

Catheryn Morgan will holding three book signings in Toronto coming up Feb. 24-Feb. 26, including Indigospirit in Mount Sinai Hospital on Friday Feb. 24 from 11-2 and Eaton Centre Indigo on Feb. 26 from 2-4.  One dollar from sale of each book goes to Canadian Pain Coalition. 

Adults also use the book with their children and grandchidren to discuss how adults cope with physical and emotional pain. It is a great resource for adults to use to explain adult suffering to children, as well as for parents, volunteers and health professionals to use with suffering children.
